“What is a Living History?”

A Living History is an educational-type of program conducted by history reenactors, that aims to inform, entertain, and enlighten audiences of all ages. The Ohio Valley Civil War Association specializes in performing Living History programs with a goal of promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of the history of our nation during the Civil War. We set up an authentic camp and invite guests and visitors to come in and interact with the reenactors to learn more about the rich history of the era through demonstrations and by viewing authentic displays of weapons, medicines, and so much more. We provide you the opportunity to experience a soldier’s lifestyle on the campaign trail.
See, hear, and feel what life during the 1860’s was really like. By spending a part of your day with us, you will be able to witness the firing of a cannon, the aroma of camp food cooked over a fire, the great smell of black powder from the shooting of muskets, and the sweet sound of reveille. You can watch a surgeon performing an “amputation” and see soldiers in camp polishing the brass on their uniforms, cleaning their muskets, and writing letters home. You will be able to hear stories about the role of women and civilians and listen to period music played on instruments of the era. You can visit the Company Headquarters and hear a recruiting officer calling volunteers to enlist. Send a message on a working telegraph machine or kick back and enjoy the great outdoors on a seat along the “military street” of canvas tents. It is a fun and enjoyable experience for all.
